Nancy McTigue is a direct descendant of American landscape artist Ralph Albert Blakelock. She was born and raised in the Mojave Desert. She obtained her bachelor’s degree from the College of Creative Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara and her medical degree and specialty training in psychiatry from the University of California, San Diego. Over the next 20 years, while working as a psychiatrist, she studied with La Jolla artist Sebastian Capella. Dr. McTigue closed her psychiatry practice in 2007 in order to paint full time.

In 2006 she enrolled at the Watts Atelier of the Arts, where she studied under several instructors for the next decade. She has painted with several different painting groups in the San Diego area. She is a member of the Rancho Santa Fe Art Guild as well as other local and national art organizations.
